Description: MRNAs encoding the endoplasmic reticulum chaperone proteins calreticulin and Grp78/BiP were previously detected in sensory axons by RT-PCR and array hybridization (7, 30). Because these analyses used lysed axons that could contain proximal axonal segments, we used FISH to directly visualize the mRNAs in dissociated cultures of DRG neurons. DRG neurons showed punctate FISH signals for beta-actin, calreticulin, and Grp78/BiP mRNAs that extended into growth cones (Fig. 1A).
